Meet The Gathering Group’s Eyes Behind the Brand : Jazzie Bernabe

Q. Where are you from?
I grew up in Plainfield, IL- a southwest suburb about 40 minutes from Chicago.

Q. Who is your favorite musical artist/group?
It’s difficult for me to pick just one artist or group since I listen to such a wide variety of music. My favorites constantly change from day to day based on the kind of mood I’m in or the current weather. However, I will say that I have seen Ed Sheeran in concert three times. So I guess that qualifies as him being one of them. For me, there’s always an Ed Sheeran song for any mood or any type of weather.

Q. Who (or what) inspires you?
As far as design goes, pretty much everyone on Dribble. Especially Amy and Jennifer Hood. They’re two sisters who are both really great illustrators and graphic designers. I love how they branded themselves and their business (Hoodzpah). I also have a sister who happens to be a graphic designer so maybe one day we’ll put our minds (and $$) together and start something awesome.

Q. What drew you to The Gathering Group?
I really loved the idea of working for a startup group. In addition to having the graphic designer position, I’ll also have the ability to really own the creative position as a whole. I also have a passion for photography and videography, so I was really happy to hear that I’ll have an opportunity to dabble in that as well while working for The Gathering Group. Also, who wouldn’t want to help brand music festivals for a living?!

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Anywhere that’s geographically different from the midwest. I’ve lived in Illinois for my whole life so I absolutely love it when I get the chance to see mountains, oceans, volcanoes, cliffs, etc. If I had to pick off the top of my head, I’d like to visit Greece, New Zealand, Australia or Japan.

Q. What’s your favorite place to see a show (doesn’t have to be in Chicago)?
One of the best experiences I’ve had at a show was watching Meg and Dia at The Subterranean here in Wicker Park. Even though it was super packed, we ended up getting the best spot in the venue; right in the front row next to the stage stairs- which I was able to sit on while being a within reach of the performers.

Q. What are 3 of your favorite things?
My set of Pigma Micron pens, the color orange, and the occasional oatmeal chocolate chip cookie.

Q. What is your favorite album of all time?
I would say it’s a toss up between Phantom Planet’s The Guest that was released in 2002 and Popstars by Eden’s Crush from 2001. I feel no shame.

Q. What song can you listen to on repeat without getting sick of it?
I’ve been listening to She Moves by Alle Farben and Graham Candy a lot lately. I love both the radio and acoustic versions. Also, was blown away by the fact that Graham Candy is a man. What a voice!

Q. What has been your most memorable moment to-date with The Gathering Group?
It would have to be decorating my cubicle, having opportunities to go to SoHo House for meetings and of course filling out this questionnaire.

Q. Do you have any hidden talents?
Whenever I’m not designing or eating, I’m playing either my guitar or ukulele!

Q. Anything else we should know?
I’m getting married to my super awesome fiancé this summer, y’all should come. Yay for love!
